Malian cinema: Souleymane Cissé, Cheick Oumar Sissoko and film in Bamako

Malian cinema at a glance: Souleymane Cissé, born and died in Bamako, the first sub-Saharan African filmmaker awarded at Cannes for a feature (Yeelen, 1987), Cheick Oumar Sissoko and Guimba, Mali's National Cinematography Centre and the 2026 tour of the film on Yambo Ouologuem.

Bamako gave African cinema one of its greatest names, Souleymane Cissé, and several films awarded at FESPACO in Ouagadougou. Here are the landmarks for discovering Malian cinema, its directors and the institution behind it.

Before you travel: in October 2026, France and the United Kingdom advise against all travel to Mali, Bamako included. Read our page on safety and travel advice.

Key points

  • Souleymane Cissé (1940-2025), born and died in Bamako, won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1987 for Yeelen: he was the first sub-Saharan African filmmaker awarded at Cannes for a feature film.
  • He won the Étalon de Yennenga at FESPACO twice, in 1979 (Baara) and 1983 (Finyè).
  • Cheick Oumar Sissoko won the Étalon de Yennenga for Guimba (1995) and was Minister of Culture from 2002 to 2007.
  • The National Cinematography Centre of Mali (CNCM) supports production, promotion and mobile cinema.

Souleymane Cissé, Bamako's filmmaker

Born on 21 April 1940 in Bamako, Souleymane Cissé discovered cinema as a child, going to screenings with his older brothers. After independence he screened and introduced films at Bamako's youth centre, then studied film at the VGIK institute in Moscow, graduating in 1969. Back in Mali, he travelled the country as a cameraman-reporter for the Ministry of Information.

His first feature in Bambara, Den Muso (The Young Girl, 1975), about a mute girl rejected by her family, was banned for three years and landed him in prison. Then came the films that made his name:

FilmYearMain award
Baara (Work)1978Étalon de Yennenga, FESPACO 1979
Finyè (The Wind)1982Étalon de Yennenga, FESPACO 1983; Tanit d'or at Carthage
Yeelen (Brightness)1987Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival 1987
Waati (Time)1995
Min yé (Tell Me Who You Are)2009presented at Cannes

Yeelen, shot between 1984 and 1987, is an initiation tale drawn from Bambara tradition. In 2023 Souleymane Cissé received the Carrosse d'or from the Directors' Fortnight; the trophy was reported stolen from his Bamako home in April 2024. He died in Bamako on 19 February 2025, aged 84, a few days before he was due to chair a FESPACO jury.

Cheick Oumar Sissoko and other directors

Born in 1945 in San, Cheick Oumar Sissoko started at the National Film Production Centre. His films include Finzan (1989), Être jeune à Bamako (Being Young in Bamako, 1992) and Guimba, the Tyrant (1995), winner of the Étalon de Yennenga at FESPACO and the special jury prize at Locarno. He was Minister of Culture from 2002 to 2007, and in 2013 was elected secretary general of the Pan-African Federation of Filmmakers (FEPACI).

Other Malian directors who have marked the national cinema include Adama Drabo, Falaba Issa Traoré, Abdoulaye Ascofaré and Assane Kouyaté.

The National Cinematography Centre of Mali

The CNCM is a public scientific, technological and cultural institution. It replaced the National Film Production Centre in 2005. Its missions: film promotion and co-production, documentary and artistic news, and mobile cinema, which takes screenings beyond the theatres.

In 2026 the Ministry of Culture entrusted the CNCM with organising a screening tour of the documentary Yambo Ouologuem, la blessure by Senegalese filmmaker Kalidou Sy, from 26 to 31 March 2026. The film looks back at the Malian writer Yambo Ouologuem, winner of the 1968 Prix Renaudot: see our page on literature and theatre in Mali.
