Quartier du Fleuve is one of the twenty neighborhoods of Bamako's Commune III, true to its name located along the Niger River.
A riverside setting on the south side of Commune III
Commune III is bordered to the south by a stretch of the Niger between the Martyrs Bridge and the Motel de Bamako. Quartier du Fleuve occupies part of this riverfront, a traffic corridor and an important geographic landmark for this part of the commune. The commune itself covers about 23 km², bordered to the north by the Cercle de Kati, to the east by Boulevard du Peuple, which separates it from Commune II, and to the west by the Farako River and Avenue Cheick Zayed El Mahyan Ben Sultan toward ACI 2000.
The Martyrs Bridge, a historic landmark of the neighborhood
The Martyrs Bridge, which marks the sector's southern boundary, was inaugurated in 1957 under the name "pont de Badalabougou." It was renamed in memory of the demonstrators killed during the events of March 26, 1991, under Moussa Traoré's regime. This structure, now colloquially known as the "old bridge," links Bamako's old downtown neighborhoods — via Avenue du Fleuve and Avenue Modibo-Keïta — to the Niger's south bank and its sprawling suburbs, via Avenue de l'OUA leading toward Modibo-Keïta International Airport. Before the 1950s, the only river crossing at this point was the Sotuba ford, located about 8 kilometers downstream.
Near the École Normale Supérieure
The neighborhood sits not far from Bamako's École Normale Supérieure (ENSup), one of the capital's higher education institutions, adding to the life of this riverside sector near downtown. The Rond-point du Cinquantenaire, located within the neighborhood, is a strategic intersection close to the ENSup.
A sector affected by traffic issues
Like other areas near Commune III's main roads, Quartier du Fleuve faces road safety issues typical of a heavily used commune that receives a large daily flow of people, particularly around the Rond-point du Cinquantenaire, which has regularly been the site of traffic accidents.
