Lafiabougou — Bamako Neighborhood

Working-class residential · Commune IV (4th arrondissement) — Bamako · Bamako

Lafiabougou is one of eight neighborhoods in Commune IV, in western Bamako. Its history illustrates well how the Malian capital's neighborhoods evolved from localized craft activity into densely populated residential areas.

From Koulébougou to Lafiabougou

Before taking its current name at its official creation in 1961, the neighborhood was called Koulébougou, literally "site of the woodworkers." That name referred to the craft activity — woodworking — that characterized the area before it was more fully urbanized. The switch to the name "Lafiabougou" at the neighborhood's official founding in 1961 symbolically marks this shift from a localized craft economy to full standing as a residential neighborhood of Commune IV.

A working-class neighborhood in a cosmopolitan commune

The shift from a name tied to a single craft to a broader residential identity mirrors a pattern seen across several of Bamako's neighborhoods, where economic specialization gradually gave way to mixed residential and commercial use as the city's population grew through the second half of the twentieth century.

Lafiabougou is one of the valley-floor neighborhoods of Commune IV, alongside Djicoroni Para, Sébénikoro, and Kalabambougou, as opposed to the hillside neighborhoods (Lassa, Taliko, Sibiribougou). Commune IV as a whole is regularly described as one of Bamako's most cosmopolitan communes, bringing together residents from different regions of the country.

The Commune IV setting

Commune IV, to which Lafiabougou belongs, had 300,085 residents at the 2009 census across an area of 42 km², making it one of Bamako's largest and most populous communes. It groups eight neighborhoods — Taliko, Lassa, Sibiribougou, Djicoroni Para, Sébénikoro, Hamdallaye, Lafiabougou, and Kalabambougou — and is regularly described in the local press as one of the capital's most cosmopolitan communes, owing to the regional diversity of its residents.

Neighborhood life

Like most of Bamako's dense residential neighborhoods, Lafiabougou combines family housing, small local shops, and neighborhood markets, with community life organized notably around mosques and neighborhood associations. Its valley-floor position, unlike the commune's hillside neighborhoods, makes it more accessible from downtown and contributes to one of the highest population densities in Commune IV, in a sector that remains above all oriented toward family housing and small-scale local commerce, much as it has been since its founding decades in the 1960s.

Population in 2023

According to the 2023 edition of the Directory of Localities of Mali by the national statistics institute (INSTAT), Lafiabougou has 82,533 inhabitants in 2023: 40,069 men and 42,465 women. These are 2023 projections based on the 2022 general census (RGPH5).

In the 2023 administrative division used by INSTAT, the Bamako district has seven arrondissements. Lafiabougou belongs to arrondissement 4 (604,000 inhabitants), where it ranks 2nd by population out of 14 neighbourhoods.
