Public hospitals in Bamako: Gabriel Touré, Point G, Hôpital du Mali and specialist teaching hospitals

Bamako hosts Mali's third-level referral hospitals, the teaching hospitals (CHU) that receive the country's most serious cases. The 2022 hospital statistical yearbook, published in July 2023 by the Ministry of Health's Planning and Statistics Unit, gives their activity hospital by hospital. This page uses its figures to help you find your way.

Key points (Ministry of Health 2022 yearbook)

The Bamako dermatology teaching hospital (CHU-HDB) is listed in the yearbook, but its 2022 data are not available.

Gabriel Touré, in the city centre, focuses on paediatrics, obstetrics-gynaecology and emergencies, according to the Ministry of Health; the former central dispensary of Bamako, opened in 1951, became a hospital on 17 January 1959. With nearly 99% of beds occupied, it is the busiest hospital in the country: the yearbook notes it is the only one above the World Health Organization's alert threshold.

Point G, on the hill of the same name north of the city, on the Kati road, sees fewer emergency patients but has over 500 beds. See our page on the Point G neighbourhood.

Hôpital du Mali, in Missabougou on the right bank, has the highest share of emergencies among third-level hospitals. The ministry sends neurosurgery cases there and to Gabriel Touré.

Le Luxembourg mother-and-child hospital

Le Luxembourg mother-and-child hospital, a second-level referral hospital, saw 81,435 patients in 2022, only 4.5% of them as emergencies. It has 119 beds, an average stay of 3 days (the shortest in the country, with Ségou hospital) and 47.9% occupancy.

About fifteen kilometres away, the CHU-BSS in Kati (163 beds) has the longest average stay in the country, 10 days, linked to its trauma department.

Before you go

  • Teaching hospitals are referral hospitals: for an ordinary consultation, start at the community health centre (CSCom) or your arrondissement's referral health centre, which refers you to hospital if needed.
  • Gabriel Touré's emergency department is overstretched: when the case allows, Hôpital du Mali or Point G may be less congested, judging by 2022 occupancy rates.
  • Bring your documents: ID card, health booklet and, if you are an employee, your INPS social security card.

These figures are for 2022, the latest year in the yearbook consulted; activity may have changed since.
